The BIPT is publishing an update on the sustainability of the telecom networks in Belgium. It specifically looks at the evolution of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and waste disposal in the 2021-2024 period.

The study shows that Belgian telecom operators continue to make efforts in terms of sustainability and that they have already set out several initiatives and goals. However, it is difficult to gain a good insight into the impact of these efforts. For instance, the sector continues to invest in renewable energy, fleet electrification and circular models, but reporting remains fragmented, its qualitative measurements are not sufficiently available and consequently it proves difficult to compare.

For most operators, CO² emissions continue to decrease, but electricity consumption increases due to further electrification and data growth. In turn, waste management is showing positive trends.

The study indicates that the telecoms sector is in an early phase of transition to mature sustainability management. Further professionalisation, standardisation and cooperation are crucial to structurally improve the environmental impact.
